Tip of the month - Car Care

When not driving your car for more than a week

If you are not going to use your car for a week or so, you can follow these simple tips to keep your car looking and feeling new.

- Avoid using car covers unless your car is in shelter. These covers can trap moisture underneath which might result in wear and tear on the paint especially when there are changes in weather.

- To avoid nasty odours from forming, you can leave a moisture-absorbing device inside your car, most commonly used in household wardrobes.

- Do not get someone to start your car every day and let it idle for a few minutes. Doing this might causes water build-up and premature corrosion in the exhaust system. If you are going away for a long time, if possible, get a friend to drive your car for half an hour every fortnight or so.

- Finally, do not disconnect the battery as this resets the car’s electronic control unit, if your car has one. Today most of the cars have such units. This unit stores vital information about the car’s operating state. All this data will be lost if the battery is disconnected for more than a few minutes.


IIM-B creams the best paid jobs [ 86 lakhs INR per annum ]

It’s official. The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), has topped the placement chart till now among its peers. The institute’s graduate Gaurav Agarwal has accepted an offer of a whopping $193,000 (Rs 86.85 lakh) per annum from the Barclays Capital London, while Venkatesh Shankaraman has received the highest domestic offer ever at an IIM of Rs 30 lakh per annum. But the latter has still not accepted the position in Mumbai made by an international firm.

IIMB director Prof Prakash Apte told ET, “This only goes to show the high quality talent that we have.” In 2005, four IIMB students got the highest international offers till then at $120,000 (Rs 56.55 lakh) from Lehman Brothers while the highest domestic offer of Rs 15 lakh was made to seven students by McKinsey & Co and Boston Consulting Group.

In all, 65 of the 182 students graduating in 2006, who signed in for placements this year, have accepted recruitment offers, according to IIMB placement committee members. Twenty one companies including 10 investment banks (Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, Barclays Capital, Lehman Brothers, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, HSBC etc); seven consulting firms (McKinsey, Bain and Co, Boston Consulting Group, AT Kearney, Deutsche Post etc) and four other international firms took part in the Day Zero placements. New firms this time were ABN Amro, Merrill Lynch, UBS, Bain and CO, Diamond Cluster and Ameriprise Financials. Locations offered includes

Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Minneapolis.

McKinsey has recruited the most number of students (nine) so far this year from IIMB. There have been 15 lateral offers made at the institute. Pre-placement offers stood at 52, of which about 13 have been accepted. In fact, Nagpur-born Gaurav Agarwal got his record placement through a pre-placement offer. Only one student Kunal Mahipal has opted to go for the entrepreneurial route.

An interesting phenomenon being seen at the IIMB campus is that students with engineering background and a couple of years of work experience are getting offers in finance and consulting firms. About 70% of the graduating class have an engineering background.

There are reports that IIM, Ahmedabad, had received its highest international offer of about $185,000 (Rs 83.25 lakh) this year.

However IIMA’s spokesperson refused to confirm it, stating only that the institute expects salary figures to be substantially higher than last year. IIMA in 2005 had seen record offers of $152,000 (Rs 68.4 lakh) and Rs 14.5 lakh in the overseas and domestic categories respectively.

IT MNC fire employees for faking CVs

BANGALORE: Wipro has just fired some employees for faking their CVs. It has also filed police complaints against several recruitment agencies for helping these employees falsify CV information.

While it’s yet not certain how many employees were shown the door, this is perhaps the first instance of Wipro’s rigorous defence system against such malpractice being so seriously breached.

Manipulation of resumes, often in active collaboration with recruitment agencies, and sometimes with the knowledge of recruitment personnel of IT companies, is assuming alarming proportions.

IBM India recently sacked many employees for the same reason. Some are said to have worked there for two years. TCS, also facing this problem, has from this year outsourced the entire process of CV verification to a specialised agency.

"The emphasis today is on speed of recruitment. Companies have many times more projects than they can handle. So recruitment processes have been undermined, enabling people with manipulated CVs to get in," says a professional, who has worked in the HR department of several IT companies.

"It’s a colossal issue," says Vinaysheel Palat, V-P in Evaluationz India, a company that specialises in employee verification through a tie-up with Globe Detective Agency.

"The US has a documentation process and social security numbers, through which one can ascertain all details about an employee. India has nothing like that. With increasing numbers of inter-state/city transfers, companies face the big risk of manipulators," she said.

Experts say recruitment agencies and recruitment personnel in companies too are often part of this fraud.

Work experience, expertise in technology domains, compensation packages and educational qualifications are the main areas of falsifying CVs.

Sometimes, we trust technology more than individuals. This is just ripe breeding ground for cyber criminals.

Organized criminal gangs target online consumers with blended phishing attacks, some of which even find out details of their interests and use them to generate phishing emails tailored to tempt them into giving away their identities. As awareness has grown about Phishing within the Internet community, the tactics used by Phishers have evolved over time making it more difficult for the consumer to realize they are being duped:

Phishers are now increasingly using automated URL obfuscation tools to deceive would-be victims. The Phisher simply enters the URL of the legitimate website and then enters the address of the fake malicious website, with the tool automatically crafting a new “socially engineered” URL that includes the text from the legitimate URL as well as special characters that actually cause the URL to direct the browser to the fake website. To the untrained eye this specially-crafted URL looks like the real thing.

The use of Embedded Java script and Active X applets is becoming more common in Phishing emails. These scripts and applets can automatically place a graphic image of the expected legitimate URL on top of the address bar within the browser to hide the actual address that the browser.

Along with phishing, pharming is emerging as a bigger threat. Pharming is the technological evolution of Phishing, and while it requires a more sophisticated and technically savvy cyber criminal, it is growing rapidly.

A skillful Pharmer takes advantage of unpatched and vulnerable software using worms and viruses to compromise Internet DNS servers or host files on personal computers to transparently redirect consumers to illegitimate websites to harvest their personal financial information.

Here are some tips on how to combat phishers & pharmers:

1. Always be up-to-date with the latest security patches as well as your Anti Virus and Firewall software on your PC.

2. Never click on an embedded URL contained in any email. Rather, enter the URL manually in your browser address bar for banking and credit card websites.

3. Never fill in forms contained within email. Personal financial info should never be sent by email. Always use a secure website - verify that the URL contains https:// and that the closed lock appears on the lower right hand side of the browser for a secure website connection.

4. Do not click on an email attachment unless you know the sender and were expecting to receive the attachment.

5. Monitor your banking and credit card accounts on line and check for illegitimate transactions regularly.

6. Register with a credit card security system that requires a password to authorize transactions.

7. Use common sense. If any deal looks too good to be true then it probably is.

8. Beware of Bait-and-Switch ploys. A store advertises a great price for a product and then claims to have sold out of it when you want to buy it. Salesperson participating in bait and switch will try high-pressure sales techniques to get you to buy a similar but different product–at a higher price. Online, vendors sometimes advertise a low price for something like a digital camera and then will try to persuade you to buy accessories you probably don’t want or need as a way to jack up the price. Always refuse such a deal.

9. Pricing engines don’t always deliver the “best deals.” Pricing engines like Froogle and others are adept at directing you to the cheapest price of a given product. But often the best price isn’t the “best deal.” Low-priced merchandise might be a lure to a scam where a site takes your money and delivers you nothing. Items advertised for sale on eBay but never delivered included Xbox video game systems, designer handbags, laptop computers, and Rolex watches.

And ridiculously low prices should show that you may be buying counterfeit.

The 25 most difficult questions you’ll be asked on a job interview

Being prepared is half the battle.

If you are one of those executive types unhappy at your present post and embarking on a New Year’s resolution to find a new one, here’s a helping hand. The job interview is considered to be the most critical aspect of every expedition that brings you face-to- face with the future boss. One must prepare for it with the same tenacity and quickness as one does for a fencing tournament or a chess match.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Since this is often the opening question in an interview, be extracareful that you don’t run off at the mouth. Keep your answer to a minute or two at most. Cover four topics: early years, education, work history, and recent career experience. Emphasize this last subject. Remember that this is likely to be a warm-up question. Don’t waste your best points on it.

2. What do you know about our organization?

You should be able to discuss products or services, revenues, reputation, image, goals, problems, management style, people, history and philosophy. But don’t act as if you know everything about the place. Let your answer show that you have taken the time to do some research, but don’t overwhelm the interviewer, and make it clear that you wish to learn more.

You might start your answer in this manner: “In my job search, I’ve investigated a number of companies.

Yours is one of the few that interests me, for these reasons…”

Give your answer a positive tone. Don’t say, “Well, everyone tells me that you’re in all sorts of trouble, and that’s why I’m here”, even if that is why you’re there.

3. Why do you want to work for us?

The deadliest answer you can give is “Because I like people.” What else would you like-animals?

Here, and throughout the interview, a good answer comes from having done your homework so that you can speak in terms of the company’s needs. You might say that your research has shown that the company is doing things you would like to be involved with, and that it’s doing them in ways that greatly interest you. For example, if the organization is known for strong management, your answer should mention that fact and show that you would like to be a part of that team. If the company places a great deal of emphasis on research and development, emphasize the fact that you want to create new things and that you know this is a place in which such activity is encouraged. If the organization stresses financial controls, your answer should mention a reverence for numbers.

If you feel that you have to concoct an answer to this question - if, for example, the company stresses research, and you feel that you should mention it even though it really doesn’t interest you- then you probably should not be taking that interview, because you probably shouldn’t be considering a job with that organization.

Your homework should include learning enough about the company to avoid approaching places where you wouldn’t be able -or wouldn’t want- to function. Since most of us are poor liars, it’s difficult to con anyone in an interview. But even if you should succeed at it, your prize is a job you don’t really want.

4. What can you do for us that someone else can’t?

Here you have every right, and perhaps an obligation, to toot your own horn and be a bit egotistical. Talk about your record of getting things done, and mention specifics from your resume or list of career accomplishments. Say that your skills and interests, combined with this history of getting results, make you valuable. Mention your ability to set priorities, identify problems, and use your experience and energy to solve them.

5. What do you find most attractive about this position? What seems least attractive about it?

List three or four attractive factors of the job, and mention a single, minor, unattractive item.

6. Why should we hire you?

Create your answer by thinking in terms of your ability, your experience, and your energy. (See question 4.)

7. What do you look for in a job?

Keep your answer oriented to opportunities at this organization. Talk about your desire to perform and be recognized for your contributions. Make your answer oriented toward opportunity rather than personal security.

8. Please give me your defintion of [the position for which you are being interviewed].

Keep your answer brief and taskoriented. Think in in terms of responsibilities and accountability. Make sure that you really do understand what the position involves before you attempt an answer. If you are not certain. ask the interviewer; he or she may answer the question for you.

9. How long would it take you to make a meaningful contribution to our firm?

Be realistic. Say that, while you would expect to meet pressing demands and pull your own weight from the first day, it might take six months to a year before you could expect to know the organization and its needs well enough to make a major contribution.

10. How long would you stay with us?

Say that you are interested in a career with the organization, but admit that you would have to continue to feel challenged to remain with any organization. Think in terms of, “As long as we both feel achievement-oriented.”

11. Your resume suggests that you may be over-qualified or too experienced for this position. What’s Your opinion?

Emphasize your interest in establishing a long-term association with the organization, and say that you assume that if you perform well in his job, new opportunities will open up for you. Mention that a strong company needs a strong staff. Observe that experienced executives are always at a premium. Suggest that since you are so wellqualified, the employer will get a fast return on his investment. Say that a growing, energetic company can never have too much talent.

12. What is your management style?

You should know enough about the company’s style to know that your management style will complement it. Possible styles include: task oriented (I’ll enjoy problem-solving identifying what’s wrong, choosing a solution and implementing it”), results-oriented (”Every management decision I make is determined by how it will affect the bottom line”), or even paternalistic (”I’m committed to taking care of my subordinates and pointing them in the right direction”).

A participative style is currently quite popular: an open-door method of managing in which you get things done by motivating people and delegating responsibility.

As you consider this question, think about whether your style will let you work hatppily and effectively within the organization.

13. Are you a good manager? Can you give me some examples? Do you feel that you have top managerial potential?

Keep your answer achievementand ask-oriented. Rely on examples from your career to buttress your argument. Stress your experience and your energy.

14. What do you look for when You hire people?

Think in terms of skills. initiative, and the adaptability to be able to work comfortably and effectively with others. Mention that you like to hire people who appear capable of moving up in the organization.

15. Have you ever had to fire people? What were the reasons, and how did you handle the situation?

Admit that the situation was not easy, but say that it worked out well, both for the company and, you think, for the individual. Show that, like anyone else, you don’t enjoy unpleasant tasks but that you can resolve them efficiently and -in the case of firing someone- humanely.

16. What do you think is the most difficult thing about being a manager or executive?

Mention planning, execution, and cost-control. The most difficult task is to motivate and manage employess to get something planned and completed on time and within the budget.

17. What important trends do you see in our industry?

Be prepared with two or three trends that illustrate how well you understand your industry. You might consider technological challenges or opportunities, economic conditions, or even regulatory demands as you collect your thoughts about the direction in which your business is heading.

18. Why are you leaving (did you leave) your present (last) job?

Be brief, to the point, and as honest as you can without hurting yourself. Refer back to the planning phase of your job search. where you considered this topic as you set your reference statements. If you were laid off in an across-the-board cutback, say so; otherwise, indicate that the move was your decision, the result of your action. Do not mention personality conflicts.

The interviewer may spend some time probing you on this issue, particularly if it is clear that you were terminated. The “We agreed to disagree” approach may be useful. Remember hat your references are likely to be checked, so don’t concoct a story for an interview.

19. How do you feel about leaving all your benefits to find a new job?

Mention that you are concerned, naturally, but not panicked. You are willing to accept some risk to find the right job for yourself. Don’t suggest that security might interest you more than getting the job done successfully.

20. In your current (last) position, what features do (did) you like the most? The least?

Be careful and be positive. Describe more features that you liked than disliked. Don’t cite personality problems. If you make your last job sound terrible, an interviewer may wonder why you remained there until now.

21. What do you think of your boss?

Be as positive as you can. A potential boss is likely to wonder if you might talk about him in similar terms at some point in the future.

22. Why aren’t you earning more at your age?

Say that this is one reason that you are conducting this job search. Don’t be defensive.

23. What do you feel this position should pay?

Salary is a delicate topic. We suggest that you defer tying yourself to a precise figure for as long as you can do so politely. You might say, “I understand that the range for this job is between $______ and $______. That seems appropriate for the job as I understand it.” You might answer the question with a question: “Perhaps you can help me on this one. Can you tell me if there is a range for similar jobs in the organization?”

If you are asked the question during an initial screening interview, you might say that you feel you need to know more about the position’s responsibilities before you could give a meaningful answer to that question. Here, too, either by asking the interviewer or search executive (if one is involved), or in research done as part of your homework, you can try to find out whether there is a salary grade attached to the job. If there is, and if you can live with it, say that the range seems right to you.

If the interviewer continues to probe, you might say, “You know that I’m making $______ now. Like everyone else, I’d like to improve on that figure, but my major interest is with the job itself.” Remember that the act of taking a new job does not, in and of itself, make you worth more money.

If a search firm is involved, your contact there may be able to help with the salary question. He or she may even be able to run interference for you. If, for instance, he tells you what the position pays, and you tell him that you are earning that amount now and would Like to do a bit better, he might go back to the employer and propose that you be offered an additional 10%.

If no price range is attached to the job, and the interviewer continues to press the subject, then you will have to restpond with a number. You cannot leave the impression that it does not really matter, that you’ll accept whatever is offered. If you’ve been making $80,000 a year, you can’t say that a $35,000 figure would be fine without sounding as if you’ve given up on yourself. (If you are making a radical career change, however, this kind of disparity may be more reasonable and understandable.)

Don’t sell yourself short, but continue to stress the fact that the job itself is the most important thing in your mind. The interviewer may be trying to determine just how much you want the job. Don’t leave the impression that money is the only thing that is important to you. Link questions of salary to the work itself.

But whenever possible, say as little as you can about salary until you reach the “final” stage of the interview process. At that point, you know that the company is genuinely interested in you and that it is likely to be flexible in salary negotiations.

24. What are your long-range goals?

Refer back to the planning phase of your job search. Don’t answer, “I want the job you’ve advertised.” Relate your goals to the company you are interviewing: ‘in a firm like yours, I would like to…”

25. How successful do you you’ve been so far?

Say that, all-in-all, you’re happy with the way your career has progressed so far. Given the normal ups and downs of life, you feel that you’ve done quite well and have no complaints.

Present a positive and confident picture of yourself, but don’t overstate your case. An answer like, “Everything’s wonderful! I can’t think of a time when things were going better! I’m overjoyed!” is likely to make an interviewer wonder whether you’re trying to fool him . . . or yourself. The most convincing confidence is usually quiet confidence.

Apple has announced the iPod Radio Remote, which combines the convenience of a wired remote control with new FM radio capabilities for the iPod nano and fifth generation iPod.

The iPod Radio Remote allows users to skip tracks and adjust the volume of their iPod even when it’s in a pocket or back-pack, and listen to FM radio stations while displaying station and song information on their iPod screen.

In addition to the iPod Radio Remote, are the iPod AV Connection Kit and the new iPod nano In-Ear Lanyard Headphones. The iPod AV Connection Kit includes everything needed to connect the iPod to a TV for watching photo slideshows and video, or a stereo system for listening to music, and charges the iPod.

The new iPod nano In-Ear Lanyard Headphones, according to Apple, combine the best of the iPod nano Lanyard Headphones and the Apple In-Ear Headphones, providing convenience and style with comfort and sound quality.

The iPod Radio Remote includes a pair of Apple headphones with a shorter cable, and will begin shipping immediately for $49. The iPod displays station and song information for stations that support the Radio Data System (RDS). The iPod AV Connection Kit includes an iPod Universal Dock, an Apple Remote, an iPod AV Cable, an iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable and an iPod USB Power Adapter, and is compatible with all iPod models with a dock connector for $99.

The iPod nano In-Ear Lanyard Headphones will be available for $49, and include three different sized caps. The above accessories will begin shipping immediately, and will be available through the Apple Store.

Samsung Announces 8GB Phone


Samsung has announced plans to launch its SGH-i310, a 8GB Windows Mobile-based cell phone, in the second half of 2006.

Samsung’s fourth model to incorporate a hard-disk drive, the SGH-i310 is a candy-bar form factor handset which looks similar to the i300 HDD phone launched by Samsung last year. Like the i300, the i310 also includes a music player, dual speakers, an amplifier and a Bluetooth stereo link. The music player supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, WAV and Ogg music file formats.

With dimensions of 112 x 48 x 20 mm and weighing around 120 gms, the SGH-i310 features a 2 megapixels digital camera, Bluetooth printing and video output connector. The phone is compatible with GSM, GPRS and EDGE technologies, and runs the Windows Mobile 5.0 for smartphone operating systems.

Samsung’s 1.5GB HDD phone, SPH-V5400 launched in September 2004 was the first-ever to have an embedded hard-disk drive. The SPH-V7900 and SGH-i300, each incorporating a 3GB hard-disk drive soon followed suit.

The latest phone will reportedly be unveiled later this week at the Cebit Show beginning Thursday at Hanover, and is expected to hit European markets in the second half of 2006. The pricing has not yet been announced.

Nokia Unveils Mid-range Phones

The clam-shell Nokia 6131 includes a 1.3 megapixel camera and high-quality display offering up to 16 million colors, while the candy bar Nokia 6070 - according to the company, represents its most accessible camera phone. Both the Nokia 6131 and Nokia 6070 are expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2006.




The 1.3 Megapixel Nokia 6131 sports a large, high-resolution, true-color QVGA display that supports 16 million colors while the cover display offers 262K colors. The phone allows consumers to enjoy their favorite music with the built-in digital music player and FM stereo radio supporting Visual Radio. Other features include Bluetooth wireless technology, email client supporting attachments, memory card slot for hot-swappable microSD memory card, Nokia Xpress audio messaging and push-to-talk connectivity.

The quadband Nokia 6131 (GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900) is expected to be available to customers in European, Asian, African and select Latin American markets in the second quarter of 2006 at an estimated retail price of 275 EUR, excluding taxes and subsidies. A version for North American markets will be announced later in 2006.

The Nokia 6070 offers basic camera phone capabilities and stereo FM radio. The handset touts a large color display and clear keypad layout, combined with the Nokia Series 40 user interface.

The 6070 presents a range of functions for easy messaging that includes SMS, MMS, Nokia Xpress audio messaging, email and instant messaging. Voice communication features include push-to-talk, voice recorder and an integrated handsfree speaker, complemented by an infrared interface. XHTML browser enables easy browsing for news and uploading images and videos for sharing using fast EDGE data communication.


The phone comes with a stereo FM radio and supports true tones, MP3 and polyphonic MIDI ringing tones.

Hydrabad TO HOUSE LARGEST INFY CAMPUS

Going by current indications, Hyderabad is all set to house Infosys’ largest campus in the country. Even though negotiations are on, the Indian IT bellwether is likely to set up its second campus in the city spread over 400-700 acres at Maheshwaram, close to the upcoming international airport. A high-level Infosys team, which deals with infrastructure issues is expected to be in town later this week to have a close look at the land being offered to them. The team will also indicate the amount of land it wants.

President A P J Abdul Kalam on Friday urged the Indian IT industry to aim at 50 percent of the total world IT market and increase IT revenues to $200 billion by 2010. “The present projection of NASSCOM is $60 billion by 2010 and I am here to discuss how to make it $ 200 billion,” the President said while addressing the plenary session of Nasscom 2006: India Leadership Forum. Listing out suggestions on achieving the target, Kalam asked NASSCOM to convert the addressable market of IT and ITeS into an actual market.
